These letters were loaned to the Library by Charles E. Moran, Jr. of Free Union, Virginia, on March 1, 1990.

Scope and Content Information

The earliest letter, December 27, 1807, from James Maury to [William Fontaine], mentions facts concerning his family, including their ages, the uncertainty of the relations between England and the United States, especially in regards to the attack upon the Chesapeake by Admiral Berkeley and the proclamation issued by England concerning the regulations permitting neutrals to trade, and Maury's lack of progress in translating the memoir of their great grandfather Fontaine.

The second letter, May 8, 1850, from M.L. Fontaine to her son, John B. Fontaine, contains much family news and admonitions to be a good boy, presumably while away at school.
