Henry Clay Collection, Accession #3417-b, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
These items were made a gift to the library by Mrs. Bernard P. Mayo of Charlottesville, Virginia on October 4, 1984.
These items were originally received in 1979 as part of Professor Bernard P. Mayo's Papers (#12746) but were removed for separate accessioning.
This collection consists of items concerning Henry Clay and the political events of his period. The collection contains correspondence, a deposition regarding a slave, a talbotype of Clay, and other related items. The three letters from Henry Clay (two originals and one transcript) deal entirely with personal matters, including: disposition of some personal property to his son, April 30, 1852; an introductory letter on behalf of two Kentucky inventors, March 24, 1845; and an acknowledgement of his membership in the Colombian Horticulture Society, May 2, 1834. Items of a political nature include: a letter concerning a mass meeting in support of Clay's candidacy for President, September 23, 1844; a campaign badge for the Clay-Frelinghuysen campaign, [ca. 1844]; and an incomplete manuscript of a pro-Whig political drama concerning the election of 1836, n.d. The remainder of the collection contains: a legal deposition made by Henry Clay, October 3, 1818; a talbotype of Henry Clay, 1850; a printed invitation to the celebration of the 89th anniversary of Clay's birthday, April 12, 1866; and a letter, September 24, 1934, concerning the purchase of the letter Clay dated April 30, 1852.
