Acquisition Information

This collection was a gift to the Library on May 20, 1982, from Mr. and Mrs. Virginius R. Shackelford, Jr., of Orange, Virginia.

Scope and Content Information

This accession consists primarily of the professional correspondence of Virginius R. Shackelford while serving on a State Board of Education Committee which cooperated with the State Library Board in developing library service in rural Virginia. His correspondents include: Randolph W. Church, President of the Virginia Library Association; Sidney B. Hall, Superintendent of Public Instruction; Robert B. Tunstall, Chairman of the Library Board of Virginia; C. W. Dickinson, Jr., Director of Public School Libraries; Abram P. Staples, Attorney General of Virginia; and members of the Library Committee of the State Board of Education.

Also incluced is a transcript of an interview with C. W. Dickinson, Jr., from a radio program on WRNL, an agreement between the joint sponsors of the WPA State-Wide Library Project and a detailed history of this project, and several reprints of articles pertaining to rural library service in Virginia.
