Acquisition Information

This material was a gift to the library from Mrs. Vinton H. Valentine of Charlottesville, Virginia through the Rare Book Department on November 6, 1985.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists chiefly of letters from Vinton H. Valentine in France during World War I to his father, Robert P. Valentine in Charlottesville, Virginia. Most of the letters concern Valentine's health and needs as "the things I would like to tell are the very things that are not best and are not allowed." Of interest is a letter from Robert P. Valentine mentioning business in Charlottesville and deaths in the flu epidemic. There are also a book of souvenir postal cards of war scenes in St. Mihiel, France, and a print of Tiflis, Transcaucasia, Russia.
