Papers of Thomas Perkins Abernethy, Accession #12765-f, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
The papers were presented to Alderman Library in 1976 as a gift by the estate of Thomas Perkins Abernethy through Mr. Cecil Abernethy, Thomas Perkins Abernethy's brother.
This collection was originally accessioned as MSS 6464-f.
The #6464-f portion of the Thomas Perkins Abernethy Collection contains approximately three hundred items spanning the years 1933-1967. The bulk of this collection consists of materials used by Abernethy in compiling the history of his family. The final result of Abernethy's research appears in the form of a pamphlet entitled The Antecedents of the Abernethy Family in Scotland, Virginia and Alabama which is included in the collection. The collection is comprised of the letters, rough manuscripts, photographs and references used in compiling the history of the Abernethy famly. Also contained in the collection are five items of personal correspondence of Abernethy.
The library received this portion of the collection as Abernethy arranged it, that is, in four basic files; correspondence with Robert Gordon, correspondence with family, a file for general correspondence and a file containing general historical sources. The files were kept essentially in this mannerwith only a few changes. Within each series, papers were organized chronologically. Photographs and note cards may be found at the end of the collection.
