Acquisition Information

The collection was given to the Library by Mr. Bruce Engstler of Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 22, 1982.

Scope and Content Information

This collection includes seven letters, chiefly concerning new and personal matters of a Maine family during the Civil War. One letter describes a domestic Christmas scene. Another is from a Virginia soldier to his sister describing Confederate camp life.

In addition, there are ten miscellaneous items, most bearing no date, comprising an anonymous sermon, a ballad, Young Charlotte, a recipe, an invoice, a receipt, and various notes. There is also an 1865 August 16 printed memorandum re the return of real estate to ex-Confederates, dispatched from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned lands, with questions re loyalty to the United States on the verso.
