These items were purchased from Central Virginia Coin & Antique Exchange of Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 21, 1988.
This collection consists of an undated carte-de-viste (sephia) photograph of the artist Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) and a letter from Peale to [Asher Brown ?] Durand, May 21, 1858, discussing his large painting of "Washington before Yorktown," which he retouched before offering it to Congress to be hung in the Rotunda of the Capitol, a lecture before the Art Association in Washington, D.C., his portrait of Chief Justice Marshall, which was placed in the Virginia State Library, and his viewing of Thomas Crawford's "Equestrian Washington" and Jean Antoine Houdon's marble statue of Washington in Richmond, Virginia.
