Photographs of "Westcairns," Albemarle County, Accession #9732-g, Special Collections, University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
These photographs were given to the Library by Jerry N. Showalter of Ivy, Virginia, on August 13, 1986.
Four photographic prints of "Westcairns," Albemarle County, ca. 1900-1912. were prepared from copy negatives. An inscription on one of the original photographs indicated that the house was "built by H B Boone and Kenneth Brown with negro 'hands' ranging from $2 a day to 25c. Average $1 or less. R E Shaw, architect." In addition to this photograph which shows the house as "half done," there are photographs of the finished building and of its interior, ca. 1900. There is one of its exterior and the surrounding landscape, ca. 1912. Situated near the University of Virginia, "Westcairns" was "the old McElroy residence on the Ivy Road site of what is now the Children's Rehabilitation Center."
