George S. Plants Collection, mss 00029, Virginia Military Institute Archives, Lexington, VA.
The collection was donated to the Virginia Military Institute in 1973 by the daughters of George S. Plants.
George Sands Plants was born at Paint Rock, Texas on December 16, 1885. His parents were Galen Sands Plants and Frances Agnes Cooke. Plants entered the Virginia Military Institute in September 1904 and resigned in March 1906. He immediately accepted the position of bookkeeper at First National Bank of Seymour, Texas. He spent his entire career at that institution, serving as president and chairman of the board, and was active in civic affairs. Plants married Verda Kenan of Seymour on February 8, 1911. The couple had three daughters---Janette, Elsa, and Martha. Plants died in Seymour on April 30, 1971.
The collection consists of four items relating primarily to the Virginia Military Institute cadetship (1904-1906) of George Sands Plants. Included are Plants's cadet account book, listing VMI expenses 1904-1906; a notebook containing popular VMI football yells, circa 1905; one letter (May 14, 1905) from Plants to his parents concerning the Mess Hall fire and mentioning the upcoming New Market Day ceremony; and one letter from Plants's classmate Jesse P. Jarvis, dated July 1909.
