Shot Tower Document, Mss. Collection 1998.2, Kegley Library, Wytheville Community College, Wytheville, VA
Provenance of this document is unknown.
Michael Jackson and Robert Jackson inherited the Shot Tower, located on the New River in Wythe County, Virginia, from their uncle Thomas Jackson who died in 1824. Michael Jackson and Robert Jackson were the sons of John Jackson (1766-1826), the brother of fellow emigrant Thomas Jackson. The brothers rented the tower to their cousin Robert Raper; Raper's mother Ann Jackson Raper Walton was the sister of Thomas and John Jackson. The Shot Tower was used for the manufacture of shot. The Tower is now part of the Shot Tower State Park system.
The Shot Tower Document is a one page memorandum of agreement between Michael Jackson and Robert Jackson with Robert Raper dated 31 January 1835. The Jackson brothers agreed to rent the Shot Tower to Raper for six years. In return Robert Raper agreed to build a factory for the manufacture of shot and paint the tower with lime.
