Biographical/Historical Information
Originally Middle Plantation, a 1632 fortified settlement located on high ground on the Peninsula between the James and York rivers, it was renamed Williamsburg after the capital of the Virginia Colony was moved there from Jamestown in 1698. The town received a royal charter as a city in 1722, and was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution.
Scope and Content
Deed of a lot in Williamsburg, Va., by John Blair and Robert Andrews representing the trustees of Williamsburg, Va. Lot is bounded on north by Capitol Square, on east by street leading from south gate of Capitol to Francis St., on south by Francis St., and on west by Thomas Nelson's lot. Must be built upon within twenty-four months. Witnessed by {?} R{us}sell. Recorded by Ben{jamin} C{arter} Waller, Clerk of James City County, Va.
