Historical Information
Glenda C. Booth was a senior Congressional staff member and former employee of the United States Department of Education during its first two years. Booth worked on the development and foundation of the United States Department of Education. The US Department of Education was founded in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. The primary functions of the Department of Education are to "establish policy for, administer and coordinate most federal assistance to education, collect data on US schools, and to enforce federal educational laws regarding privacy and civil rights." The Department's stated mission is "to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access."
Scope and Content
Papers collected by Booth during her time working for the U.S. Department of Education. The documents include the first organization chart, lobbying materials, legislative records, correspondence, and newsletters and largely document the formation of the Department of Education.
