Biographical/Historical Information
Born about 1819, James Washington Lugenbeel became involved with the American Colonization Society's efforts to relocate freed slaves to Liberia. He served as an agent, physician, and recording secretary for the society. He wrote a work on the Liberia colony, entitled Sketches of Liberia: comprising a brief account of the geography, climate, productions, and diseasses, of the Republic of Liberia . Lugenbeel died in 1857.

A letter, dated 8 May 1851, from J. W. Lugenbeel (ca. 1819-1857), recording secretary of the American Colonization Society in Washington, D.C., to W. J. Winston of Louisa County, Virginia, discussing operation of the American Colonization Society in regard to transportation of freed slaves to Liberia.
