Biographical/Historical Information
Fielding Lewis (1763-1834) obtained claim to the estate Weyanoke in Charles City County, Virginia through his marriage to Agnes Harwood, probably in 1788. In addition to the 800 acre Weyanoke plantation, Lewis owned or was involved in the management of properties in other parts of Virginia.
Scope and Content Information
Material included in this accession consists of receipts, accounts, bonds, invoices, correspondence, legal documents, plantation insurance policies and inventories, and farming instructions of Fielding Lewis, mainly for the period 1795 through 1834. Other items of interest include lists of taxable slaves and accounts for their clothing; wills, inventories, or estate accounts of the Lewis family, recorded in Gloucester and Charles City counties, Virginia; and accounts, receipts, and correspondence of Robert Douthat, 1832-1900. Also included is a study of the collection, prepared in 1929.
