Biographical/Historical Information
Sylvanus Hartshorn was born in Schenectady, New York 27 September 1793. He moved to Norfolk, Virginia, and became a businessman. Hartshorn served as a magistrate for Norfolk, and also sold insurance. He married Deidamia Allen (1797-1866) of Providence, Rhode Island, 23 November 1815, and they had at least two children. Hartshorn died in Norfolk 18 November 1866, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery
Scope and Content Information
Letter, 31 May 1849, from Sylvanus Hartshorn (1793-1866) of Norfolk, Virginia, to Benjamin C. Miller of Newark, New Jersey, sending a list of insurance policies he has sold for the insurance company he and Miller work for. Included on the lists are five slaves and Hartshorn mentions selling other insurance policies on slaves that are not listed. Hartshorn also writes that his license is up and asks Miller to inform the board of directors of the company to make a decision on who will be their new agent.
