Biographical/Historical Information

The James River Steamboat Company was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly in 1833 for the purpose of operating a steamboat between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia. The first president was Edward G. Mayo and Robert Anderson was secretary.

Scope and Content Information

Journal, 1833-1849, including stock accounts showing name of purchasers, interest accounts, records of dividends paid stockholders beginning in 1839 July, income statements for passengers and freight, and maintenance expenses on steamboats. There are records of payments made to George C. Pickett for rent of two wharves at Rocketts and to W.J. Morris for a whart at City Point, Virginia. Entries indicate that by 1842, the company boats were traveling to Washington and transporting mail.
