Scope and Content Information

This collection contains genealogical notes, photographs, letters, printed material, applications, and a will concerning the Thornton family of Caroline, Gloucester, Hanover, Northumberland, Spotsylvania, Stafford and York Counties, Virginia; and Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Texas. Rachael Thornton compiled this information in 1965 as evidence for her Daughters of the American Revolution application.

Includes 13 photographs taken in the 1950's of "Ormesby," the Thornton family home in Caroline County; a will, 3 January 1757, of Anthony Thornton (1695-1757); letters, 1963-1965, exchanged between Rachael Thornton and Mary Croft Andrews concerning Thornton family genealogy; and printed material and genealogical notes concerning the Thornton family. Also includes a completed membership application for entrance in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The genealogical notes includes the ages of slaves owned by Charles T. Thornton (1758-1805) as well as information concerning the Presley, Schofield and Tolliver families.
