Biographical/Historical Information

Dr. Phillip A. Klipstein (1781-1855), physician, farmer, and owner of a mercantile store, came to New Baltimore from Winchester in the early 1800's. He helped to organize the New Baltimore Academy in Fauquier County (incorporated in 1827) and served as a trustee. In the later years, two of his sons, Thomas E. (1818-1860) and John H. (1826-1892) ran the mercantile business.

Scope and Content Information

This collection presents a good picture of the people and customs of the era in Fauquier County, Virginia. Includes 3 vols. kept by Dr. Phillip A. Klipstein: 1 ledger (1822-1827) contains records for the sale of liquor, dry goods and groceries; 1 ledger (1840-1850) has medical and mercantile accounts; and 1 mutilated journal (1840, 1853, 1869, 1847) contains store accounts.

The last 3 vols. were kept by two of Dr. Phillip A. Klipstein's sons, Thomas E. and John H.: 1 journal (1846-1850) has mercantile accounts; 2 ledgers also contain mercantile accounts (1847-1853, 1851-1894), blacksmith accounts (1858-1862), hired workers' accounts (1860-1874), mill accounts (1862-1877), school tuition accounts (1867-1870), an expense account for taking a census of school children (1871), and rental accounts (1879-1894).

Arrangement

Arranged for the most part, chronologically. The first 3 vols. (2 ledgers and 1 journal, 1822-1869) were kept by Dr. Phillip A. Klipstein; the last 3 vols. (1 journal and 2 ledgers, 1846-1894) were kept by his sons, Thomas E. and John H. Klipstein.
