Biographical/Historical Information
Lawson and Newton Company, a cemetery monument company was established in Hampton, Virginia, in 1901 by James Anderson Lawson, Sr., and Robert C. Newton. In 1907 the company moved to Norfolk, Virginia. After 1918 the Lawson family was the sole owner. James A. Lawson, Jr., assumed management of the company at his father's death in 1949. The company went bankrupt in 1980.
Scope and Content Information
Recorded in the order books are sketches of sepulchral monuments and notations of dimensions, type of stone, inscriptions, cost, and place of shipment. Volumes are indexed by name of the purchaser. Most orders are from individuals in the Tidewater Virginia area and North Carolina.
