Biographical/Historical Information

Marie Gordon Pryor Rice was born April 1850 to Roger A. Pryor (1828-1919) and Sarah Agnes Rice Pryor (1830-1912). She grew up in Charlotte County, Virginia, but after the Civil War moved to New York, New York, with her parents. She moved back to Charlotte County after her marriage to Henry Crenshaw Rice (1842-1916). They had at least 4 children. Rice and her husband later moved to Nottoway County.

Scope and Content Information

Recollections written by Marie Gordon Pryor Rice of Charlotte County, Virginia, about the time of the first World War, in which she remembers life at South Isle and The Oaks plantations in Charlotte County during the Civil War and the last half of the 19th century. She includes observations on society and culture, religion, slavery, canning and preserving, tenant farming, race relations, agriculture, gardens, and other aspects.
