Biographical/Historical Information
David Keiholtz was born about 1827 in Frederick County, Maryland. He moved to Adams County, Pennsylvania, and became a miller. He was drafted 18 October 1862 into Company F, 165th Pennsylvania Regiment, a nine- month unit. He served with his regiment in Suffolk, Virginia, and was discharged 28 July 1863.
Scope and Content Information
Papers, 1862-1863, of David Keiholtz of Adams County, Pennsylvania, and the 165th Pennsylvania Regiment, consisting of: a) notice, 27 August 1862, informing Keiholtz that he has been enrolled as a citizen of Adams County eligible to be drafted for military service; b) draft notice, 18 October 1862, informing Keiholtz he has been drafted into military service; c) letter, 8 January 1863, from Daniel P. Keiholtz to David Keiholtz discussing his brother's being drafted, commenting on the war and slavery, detailing the makeup of his corps, asking about David's service with the army near Suffolk, Virginia, stating he has seen a balloon, and commenting on fighting; d) letter, 21 April 1863, from Daniel Keiholtz to David Keiholtz commenting on the action around Suffolk, the land and people around Fredericksburg, Virginia, and general news, and commenting that there will be heavy fighting in the summer; e) discharge notice, 28 July 1863, for David Keiholtz of the 165th Pennsylvania drafted militia for reason of expiration of term of service; f) discharge notice, 25 December 1863, for Daniel Keiholtz of Company K, 65th New York Infantry for reason of reelistment, he received a bounty for reelisting; and g-h) envelopes for letters to David Keiholtz while in the army serving around Suffolk.
