Scope and Content
This accession includes a research paper entitled "For the Speaker to Sit On: An Analysis of the Speaker's Chair of the Virginia House of Burgesses and Two Reproductions" by Lisa L. Huevel, photographs used to illustrate the research paper, and two measured drawings of Colonial Williamsburg's 1962 reproduction Speaker's Chair by Johannes J. Huevel, Colonial Williamsburg master carpenter. The drawings are filed in the LVA General Architectural Files Collection.
Lisa L. Heuvel is the daughter-in-law of Johannes J. Huevel. The research paper fulfilled a requirement in a College of William and Mary Decorative Arts class. It discusses the history of the original chair, the precedent for such furnishings, and the 1962 and 1996 reproductions undertaken by Colonial Williamsburg.
