Historical Information
Samuel J. Campbell Company was a general store owned by Samuel J. Campbell that conducted business in Rockbridge County, Virginia during the mid-nineteenth century. Virginia Military Institute was one of the store's customers.
Scope and Content
Ledger, 1868-1875, of Samuel J. Campbell Company, a general store, that records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost per item, amount owed, amount paid, and form of payment. Items sold include dry-goods, clothing, shoes, and butter. Most entries contain the general term "Merchandise" or "Sundries." Forms of payments include cash, credit, and barter of items such as flour, butter, and turkeys. Other accounts found in volume include the store's controlling accounts such as merchandise account, interest account, and cash account.
