Montgomery County was formed in 1776 from Fincastle County. Part of Botetourt County was added in 1789 and part of Pulaski County was added in 1842.

Montgomery County (Va.) Clerk's Correspondence, 1821 Aug. 28. The document is a letter from the Auditor's Office to the Montgomery County Clerk of County Court detailing the clerk's responsibilities to the auditor under state law.
