These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Middlesex County.
Historical Information
Middlesex County was formed in 1669 from Lancaster County.
The deed books of Middlesex County in this collection were created by the County Court.
Scope and Content
Deed Books, 1687-1799, of Middlesex County Court. The deed book records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred. All of the volumes have indexes except (1767-1785). The index contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z. The deed and miscellaneous volume (1687-1750 and 1762-1881) has will information which includes the name of testator, list of heirs and the year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements.
