Acquisition Information

The 1794 Land Tax record came in a donation to the Library of Virginia on 03/29/1941 under accession number 21813. The remaining records came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from Mathews County.

Historical Information

Locality History: Mathews County was named for Thomas Mathews, of Norfolk, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates when it was formed from Gloucester County by a statute passed on 16 December 1790 to take effect on 1 May 1791.

Scope and Content

Mathews County (Va.) Tax and Fiscal Records, 1792-1980 consist of assessments and reassessments of lands, capitation tax lists, Commonwealth claims, county appraisals, county bonds, county claims, delinquent lands, delinquent taxe lists, insolvent property and capitation taxes, land books, liquor licenses, liquor bonds, lists of real estate, oyster law taxes, personal property tax lists, reassessment requests, Sheriff's accounts, State Corporation Commission tax reports, surveys of Virginia land assessments, tables of tracts of land, tax exemptions, and Treasurer's records.

Arrangement

For descriptive purposes, the collection has been divided into two series:

Series I: Processed Tax and Fiscal Records, 1794, 1838-1903
Series II: Unprocessed Tax and Fiscal Records, 1792-1980
