Biographical Information
James Noah Hillman was born 6 November 1883 in Wise County, Virginia. He attended Wise County public schools. Hillman received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of William and Mary. He was an instructor at William and Mary from 1905 to 1908 and served as principal of Williamsburg High School from 1905 to 1909. Returning to Wise County, Hillman served as superintendent of schools there from 1909 to 1917. From 1917 to 1922, he was assistant state superintendent. Emory and Henry College appointed him its twelfth president in 1922. In 1941, Hillman resigned to become executive secretary for the Holston Conference (Methodist) board of education. In 1944, he resigned that post to become the full time secretary of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, and moved to Henrico County, Virginia. Hllman married Ethel Lee Powell (1885-1965) 26 June 1906, and they had four children. He died in Richmond, Virginia, 8 January 1959, and was buried in the Emory and Henry Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.

Includes correspondence, genealogical notes, minutes, photographs, and other papers.
