- Child Nutrition, 2014-2017 .
As First Lady of the Commonwealth, Mrs. McAuliffe focused on the importance of childhood nutrition and combating food insecurity across the state. As part of this initiative, the First Lady chaired the Commonwealth Council on Bridging the Nutritional Divide (Executive Order 34 (2014)). This Council was tasked with creating partnerships with the Governor's cabinet, the legislature, state agencies, national, regional and local non-profits, schools and private businesses to help close the nutritional divide, end childhood hunger, and improve food access in Virginia. Three major objectives included eliminating childhood hunger in Virginia by increasing participation in nutrition assistance programs; promoting agriculture and increasing access to affordable, healthy and local foods; and facilitating efficient and effective local initiatives related to community nutrition, food access, and health strategies and programs across the Commonwealth. Council accomplishments included the creation of Virginia Food Crop Donation Tax Credit, Virginia Grocery Investment Fund, Virginia Food Access Network, and participation in the Breakfast After the Bell program, and Virginia 3-6-5 Project, and a partnership with the No Kid Hungry Virginia campaign which helped expand participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
