Biographical Information
Albert Gallatin was a Genevan-American politician and diplomat, serving in the Senate, the House of Representatives, and as Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1814. He also served as the U.S. Minister to France and later Great Britain. He purchased land in what is now West Virginia in the counties of Kanawha, Randolph, Monongalia, and Mason.
Scope and Content
This series consists of accounts, correspondence, financial statements, and lists of delinquent land. It includes the counties the land was located in, the amount of money owed, and the profits contributed to the literary fund from land sales. The correspondence includes letters from Gallatin to the Auditor of Public Accounts regarding the land, and which parcels he would like to redeem and reclaim and which ones he would prefer be sold off.
