Scope and Content

Accounts and vouchers, 1789-1835, 1860, detailing the expenses of representing Virginia in the United States Congress and submitted to the Auditor of Public Accounts. The collection is housed chronologically into eleven (11) boxes. The accounts and vouchers represent associated costs including: travel of county sheriffs to attend Courthouses to compare the polls and certify the elections; costs to bring the returns of electors from various counties to Richmond; costs to publish a list of commissioners appointed to superintend the election of electors to choose President and Vice President; and costs of tolls and daily pay of sheriffs, among others. Each voucher shows the name of the person owed money, the amount owed, and the date the voucher was submitted.
