These records are part of Auditor of Public Accounts. Administration of State Government: State-Owned Property - Monuments. This record consists of a letter drafted by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, in April 1817, authorizing the collection of pledges for the construction of the monument to George Washington in Capitol Square. On the reverse of the letter is a short list of names and pledges from residents of Wheeling in the county of Ohio, which later became part of West Virginia.
