Historical Information

Lunenburg County was formed in 1745 from Brunswick County. Part of Charlotte County was added in 1777.

An act passed by the Virginia legislature in 1803 required every free negro or mulatto to be registered and numbered in a book to be kept by the county clerk.

Scope and Content

A List of Free Negroes and Mulattoes registered in the County of Lunenburg, 1818-1850, is actually a free negro register that records the age, name, color, stature, marks or scars, in what court the person was emancipated or whether the person was born free. Although it is noted at the beginning of this register that it began in 1815, the date of the first registration was 1818. Some clerks recorded additional information not required by law.

The register is located in the last 21 pages of Lunenburg County Will Book 5 (1800-1802).

Arrangement

Chronological by registration date.
