Historical Information

Halifax County was formed from Lunenburg County in 1752.

The General Assembly of Virginia passed a law as early as July 1, 1861, calling for the enrollment of free negroes to work in the public service. From 1862 to 1863, at the request of the president of the Confederate States, the General Assembly passed three more laws that requisitioned slaves to work on fortifications and other works of the public defense. Each county and city were alloted a certain number of slaves that had to be provided to the government under the requisition.

Scope and Content

Halifax County (Va.) Free Negro and Slave Records, 1862, consists of an order of the county court of Halifax to specific citizens who had to provide slaves between the ages of 18 and 45 years of age to the Virginia government for work on the Confederate public defenses. The order gives the text of the court's order, a list of names of persons required to send slaves, and the number of slaves that each person was required to furnish. There are numerous pencil revisions to the number of slaves required to be sent.
