Biographical/Historical Information

The Virginia Room was a part of the Court of States of the 1939 World's Fair and was designed by Leslie Cheek, Jr., and its centerpiece was an ornamental fountain, surrounded by clipped boxwoods and seating for visitors to the Fair. The room also contained photograph albums created by the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Conservation Commission, which depict all aspects of life from across the Commonwealth. Each album features an average of twenty-five black-and-white photos, with short descriptive captions, which covered one of twelve broad subject categories: agriculture; colonial archaeology; cultural and intellectual aspects; education; government and the people; historic homes; history; industry, commerce, and transportation; physiography; recreation; scenery and natural wonders; and Virginia tours, with from six to sixteen volumes devoted to each. Over 1 million people visited the Virginia Room throughout the course of the World's Fair.
