Historical Information

The 18th century was a lively time in Fairfax County, VA history. After being under the control of many different entities, in 1690 the area became controlled by the Fairfax family. Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax left the land in the charge of his cousin, William Fairfax. In 1742, the area ceased to be part of Prince William County and officially became Fairfax County.

The Office of the Clerk of Court in Fairfax County was well into its existence by 1714. The Clerk was responsible for all legal knowledge and exerting it on behalf of citizens of the county in the place of a judge, including interpreting the law, writing up legal documents, and having their instructions enforced.

Scope and Content

Fairfax County Court summons of witnesses William Gladin, John Gunston, and Mary Bradford for Mary Tarbuck. The summons was written by the then Clerk of the Court, Peter Wagener, on March 20, 1754.
