Use of Materials
The nature of the Hampden-Sydney College Archives and Special Collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine despite reasonable efforts. Biographical History
Samuel Stanhope Smith was born March 15, 1751 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) and studied theology and philosophy under John Witherspoon. He was a Presbyterian minister and the founding president of Hampden-Sydney College (1775-1779). He then went on to teach and eventually became the 7th president of the College of New Jersey (1795-1812) until he was forced to resign. Smith died on August 21, 1819 in New Jersey.
Abstract
The Samuel Stanhope Smith Lectures, 1805-1811, contains three books documenting the lectures given by Samuel Stanhope Smith in 1806 while at Princeton University. The lectures are on moral philosophy and moral theology. Not included in the collection is information about Hampden Sydney College or Princeton University.
