Acquisition Information
The collection was donated by Audrey Hatcher Vaughan in June 2009.
Processing Information
Due to the acidity of the paper and deteriorating quality, some materials have been photocopied on acid-free paper.
In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2018. This collection was previously cataloged as SC 5021 .
Bio/Historical Note
Audrey Hatcher Vaughan of Roanoke, Virginia completed the two year pre-nursing curriculum at Madison College in 1944 and subsequently transferred to the Duke University Hopsital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1947. She later become an instructor then the director of the Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. While at Madison, Vaughan was active in Sigma Alpha Sigma sorority and Clara Barton Club, and served as a cabinet member of the YWCA.
Scope and Content
The Audrey Hatcher Vaughan Papers, 1942-1944, is arranged topically into three folders: Student Life, Correspondence, and Miscellany, and consists of exams, registration information, programs, and letters and postcards from WWII soldiers and schoolmates. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and other ephemera pertaining to the donor and events relevant to her years at Madison College that were saved from a personal scrapbook.
Folder 1, Student Life, 1942-1944, consists of exams, registration materials, and documents regarding the donor's sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. Also of interest is a list of books and their corresponding prices that the donor purchased for her classes. Bulletins from the Baptist Student Union and programs from the 1943 May Day celebration and other music programs are also included.
Folder 2, Correspondence, 1942-1944, includes response letters from WWII servicemen to the donor as part of a college initiative to boost the morale of the men serving in the war. Many of the men were either acquaintances met through USO events or in-service boyfriends of the donor's fellow students. In addition, postcards received from the donor's schoolmates who lived on her hall, as well as blank postcards are included. The postcards document local sites such as the Lincoln Homestead, Harrisonburg High School, the post office and federal court house in Harrisonburg, a view of Main Street and Court Square, Washington and Lee University in Lexington, and Marshall College in Huntington, West Virginia while others are satirical in content.
Folder 3, Ephemera, 1942-1943, is composed of assorted ephemera including a souvenir silk scarf given to the donor by a boyfriend serving in the Air Force, papers and newspaper clippings related to student involvement in the war effort, and materials from a trip to Luray Caverns.
