Biographical / Historical

John H. Wilkes was an Appomattox County, Virginia native who was born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1913. He was a Private First Class Infantrymen in World War II who was drafted in 1942. He served throughout the campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and in Central Europe. On November 29, 1944, he was wounded while in Germany. He was discharged on October 27, 1945, and was given the Distinguished Unit Badge, Bronze arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, and the African, European, Middle-Eastern Service ribbon.

Scope and Contents

This collection consist of a certificate of honorable discharge belonging to John H. Wilkes. It depicts Wilkes' involvement in the war and his day of discharge and awards received.
