Biographical Note

Booker T. Washington (1859-1915) was a preeminent U.S. educator and public figure--one of the most prominent figures in turn-of-the-century efforts for racial equality. Washington founded present-day Tuskegee University, wrote multiple books and advised multiple presidents, and emphasized the development of African-Americans' vocational skills over academics and civil rights.
