These files were kept by Peter Low, who was assistant dean from 1965-1969 and associate dean from 1969-1975. The largest group
of records are from the Faculty Appointments Committee of which Law was a member; these folders contain an assortment of working
materials for selecting new faculty members. There are "original" files on student problems, military service, schedules for
classes and exams, and transfer students. The remaining files are copies of reports, memoranda and regulations from a variety
of committees.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
These files were transferred to the Law Library 15 January 1979.
RG 101-81 contains miscellaneous administraive files of the University of Virginia Law School covering the period 1970-1980.
Much of the material originated in the offices of Deans Peter Low and H. Lane Kneedler. The files contain faculty and administrative
circulars and memoranda, registration and appointments information, correspondence of the deans, and other assorted notices
and university-wide materials.
These files consist of Annual Reports. Ten notebbojs to the President, 1964-1980 (some years are missing); notebooks of worksheets
for these reports; draft of the general fund impact report, 1982; and UVA Administrative Procedures Manual 1981.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
These records were transferred to the Law Library by H. Lane Kneedler, Associate Dean, in September of 1987.
RG 101-90 contains the administrative files of H. Lane Kneedler who served as assistant and later associate dean from 1969
to 1984, working with Deans Monrad Paulsen, Emerson Spies, and Richard Merrill. These files document in detail the administration
of the Law School during this period and are particularly strong in areas such as budget, personnel, curriculum, scheduling,
and building maintenance.
This record group is extremely rich in Law School history for the period represented because the files cover not only standard
administrative matters but also special or crisis issues.
Arrangement
The majority of the documents was in labeled folders; material that was not labeled and foldered was assigned a heading in
processing. Some weeding of the files was necessary: teaching material, some routine personnel files, printed material,
job applications, and some routine University circulars were removed from the collection. The registration files were sampled
so that every other year after 1970 is represented.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
These files were transferred to the library in 1990.
