Biographical / Historical
Francis Williamson Smith was born in 1838 in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1856. He went on to become an educator and a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate artillery. Smith was wounded at Amelia Springs, Virginia on April 5, 1865 and died on April 6, 1865.
Scope and Contents
The Francis W. Smith letters collection consists of 12 letters (dated 1859-1860) from Smith and others to artist Alexander Galt. The letters concern Smith family portraits and a bust of Philip St. George Cocke, a member of the VMI Board of Visitors.
