Biographical / Historical

George Lawrence Hawkins Cooper was born in 1911 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He graduated VMI in 1932. During World War II he served with the United States Marine Corps, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He was also an educator. Cooper died in 1984 in Biloxi, Missippi, and is buried in Hawaii.

Scope and Contents

The George L. H. Cooper papers consist of two items. The first is a VMI scrapbook (1928-1932) compiled by Cooper. The scrapbook includes photographs, athletic and dance programs, clippings, and other mementos collected by Cooper during his cadetship.

The papers also include a typescript memoir, approximately 325 pages, detailing Cooper's United States Marine Corps service in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
