Biographical / Historical

Samuel H. Lewis was born on June 7, 1871 in Autumn, Culpeper County, Virginia. He matriculated into VMI on September 4, 1888 from Richmond, Virginia, and attended VMI for two years. He founded the Commonweatlh Supply Company and the Lewis Manufacturing Company, with offices in New York and Richmond, Virginia. Lewis died on April 25, 1946.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one drawing for a railroad gear improvement for steam engines, designed and patented by Samuel H. Lewis, VMI Class of 1892. The patent application was approved in 1918 with patent number 1,252,458.
