Biographical / Historical
The detached spine of this account book includes an embossed label reading "A. W. & Co." Research reveals a company named "Alfred Woodham's (located at 424 Broadway, New York) selling sporting goods, including skates, during this time period, and the account book includes a page for Alfred Woodham. By 1868, Woodham was located on New York's Canal Street and was specializing in skates. Alfred Woodham, son of James and Maria Maverick Woodham, was born in Manhattan, New York, March 8, 1823. his obituary notes that he sold sporting goods in Manhattan for many years. He married Mary Cordelia Ruland, and the couple would have three children. Alfred Woodham died in Brooklyn, New York, February 19, 1906, and was buried in Trinity Churchyard, Manhattan.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a single account book maintained by A. W. & Co. (likely Alfred Woodham & Co.), a company selling ice skates to retailers in New York and New England in the mid-19th century. The accounting entries include name of purchaser, a description of items and quantities purchased, and prices.
