Biographical note
Pvt. Charles Beverly Tate, Sr. was born February 18, 1847, in Wythe County, Virginia. His parents were Charles Campbell Tate and Elizabeth Friel Graham. He served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War, after the war he went on to be a teacher. He was married to Fannie Martin Tate, who died April 1, 1923. Charles Tate, Sr. died July 10, 1925 in Richmond, Virginia.

Scope and Content
The collection contains a letter written by Pvt. Charles Beverly Tate, Sr., who served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The letter was written on May 30, 1925, and was sent from Tate's home in Richmond, Virginia. The letter has a detailed description of his home and updates on the family. The obituary, printed by VMI, for Charles Tate, Sr. is included in the collection.
