The processing, arrangement, and description of the Charles Kirk Collection was completed in June 2025.

Biographical Note

Charles Kirk was a member of the VPI Class of 1938.

Scope and Content

The Charles Kirk Collection consists of two slide rulers, a slide ruler book and a mechanical drawing set.

The larger slide ruler is housed inside a black case with a button closure. Text on the front reads "K&E LOG LOG DECITRIG REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. SLIDE RULE 4091-3." Text on the button reads "KEUFFEL & ESSER CO. NEW YORK." Inside the case is a white slide ruler with silver hardware. Numbering on the ruler is in black and red. Also inside the case is a long strip of paper with instructions on how to adjust the ruler. The condition is good, some discoloration on the case.

The smaller slide ruler is in a black case that has black tape wrapped around it. Text on the front reads "KEUFFELL & ESSER CO. BEGINNERS SLIDE RULER." inside the case is a wooden slide ruler with black numbering. The condition is good, some discoloration of the case/tape.

The slide ruler book is a small book that is brown in color, with white pages inside. Text on the front reads "The LOG LOG DUPLEX SLIDE RULE A Self Teaching Guide" followed by publisher information. The book is in good condition with some discoloation and stains.

The mechanical drawing set is housed in a black case with two black button closures. Text on the front of the case reads "MADE IN GERMANY 47." Inside the case is a green velvet lining that holds 13 mechanical drawing tools, as well as a red cloth. A logo on the inside flap reads "SCHOENNER GS MADE IN GERMANY." The set is in good condition with some discoloation of the case and lining.
