Biographical Note

John Montgomery was from southwest Virginia, and served as the Justice of Peace in Botetourt County for two years, starting in 1770. Then served as the Justice in Fincastle County for four years, 1772-1776. John then served as a captain in the campaign of Col. George Rogers Clark. In 1785 he founded Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee. He died in battle on November 27, 1794.

Scope and Content

This collection contains a handwritten manuscript bond saying that John Montgomery will pay thirty pounds to George Grundy, written during October 1781. George Grundy was a congressman and senator from Tennessee, who became the thirteenth United States Attorney General. There are two witness signatures on the document, by Joseph Crockett and Issac Taylor. Col. Joseph Crockett was a soldier that served in the Continetal Army in 1774. Issac Taylor served as a captian of a regiment of Virginian troops in the Continental Army.
