Biographical Note

Matthew White Paxton was born on June 13, 1898 in Lexington, Virginia to Matthew White Paxton and Mary Louisa Hopkins Paxton. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1918 and 1920 (Law). He was in the Student Army Training Corp in 1919. Paxton passed away in 1987.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a scrapbook created by Matthew W. Paxton, Sr. while a student at Washington and Lee University and briefly after graduation. The scrapbook includes a lot of ephemera including event programs and dance card books as well as photographs. Subjects include Washington and Lee faculty and students, campus buildings, Lexington, Randolph-Macon Women's College, football, basketball, baseball, golf, track and field, student groups and organizations, Fancy Dress, Virginia Military Institute, a game called pushball, Bal Masque, ROTC, the New Theater fire, the dedication of Doremus gym and interior shots including the pool, Sweet Briar, ribbon societies, Alpha Tau Omega, John J. Pershing, Lexington High School, the ambulance unit, postcards of campus, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Student Army Training Corps (SATC). Of particular note is a photograph of two Asian or Asian American men identified as Lee and Tang. The scrapbook ranges in date from 1914-1919.
