Content Description

This collection consists of a pocket sized leather bound notebook used initially by William A. Anderson, Orderly or First Sergeant of the 'Liberty Hall Volunteers,' Washington College's military company organized in April 1861 for service in the Confederate army. The notebook was used to keep the daily rolls of the company and documents such things as absences, sick lists, accoutrement details, and police lists of its original members. Anderson carried the notebook from the formation of the company, which was assigned to the Fourth Virginia Infantry as Company 'I', until he was wounded at the Battle of First Manassas in July 1861. The Fourth Virginia Infantry was part of the 'Stonewall Brigade,' commanded by Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson. Anderson's replacement continued to use the volume until early September 1861. Anderson gave the notebook to Washington and Lee University in 1903. For many years it had been in the possession of fellow member of the unit Joseph L. Sherrard.
