Special Collections Research Center adds material to this collection on a regular basis.

Scope and Contents

The Education Collection is an artificial collection of artifacts and memorabilia maintained for use in exhibits, instruction, and other teaching purposes. Items in this collection may be reproductions or period artifacts, but lack documentation or significance, or duplicate objects already represented in the University Archives Artifact Collection (UA 13) and the Manuscripts Artifact Collection (Mss 1.03). Items in this collection are intentionally used in exhibits or instruction with the understanding that this will shorten the life of the objects.

Arrangement of Materials:

Artifacts are organized according to Nomenclature 3.0 for Museum Cataloging: Third Edition of Robert G. Chenhall's System for Classifying Man-Made Objects , which is published by AltaMira Press in cooperation with the American Association for State and Local History. Nomenclature 3.0 classifies artifacts based on their purpose or function.

Categories include: Built Environment Artifacts, Furnishings, Personal Artifacts, Tools and Equipment, Distribution and Transportation Artifacts, Communication Artifacts, Recreational Artifacts, and Unclassifiable Artifacts.

This collection is currently being evaluated, described, and rehoused by staff.

      Amputation Saw
      circa 1860s
      Scope and Contents

Steel amputation saw with metal and ebony handle. Short, wide bladed saw with integrated handle fashioned to fit hand having both a finger hole and a tang to supply support for base of thumb and forefinger. Used to quickly saw through bone while removing injured body parts – primarily arms and legs. After a tourniquet is applied above the injury site, a long, sharp knife is used to quickly cut through the skin and muscle around the circumference of the limb completely down to bone in (if possible) in one circular pass. After the bone is exposed, the saw is used to quickly remove the limb. The exposed muscle is cauterized with a hot iron and the edges of the bone end are rounded with a file. The large arteries and veins are tied off with silk suture material and the skin sewed together to cover the end of the stump. A skilled surgeon could complete the procedure in minutes. The patient generally was given copious amounts of liquor or laudanum (opium) prior to the surgery, but still it was necessary to have several strong men at hand to keep the patient on the operating table. Dimensions: Overall: 14.25 in.(length) x 3.0 in. (height) x 0.75 in. (thickness of handle). Toothed part of blade is 10.5 in. (length) x 0.03125 in. (thickness) and from 2.0 to 2.75 in. wide. Finger hole is 0.875 in. (diameter). Condition: Good to excellent condition with mild corrosion on blade surface and metallic frame. Dried blood is present in the checkering on the handle as well as in the corner formed by the junction of the blade and the surrounding metal frame. The teeth of the blade show moderate wear and there is evidence of wear adjacent to the teeth along the length of the blade where it contacted bone being sawn through. SCRC Purchase. EDU2015.006

    Chesapecten Jeffersonius Fossil Scallop
    Scope and Contents

Chesapecten Jeffersonius fossil scallop measuring 6 in. (length) x 5.5 in. (height). Outer anterior edge has some loss of shell material and there is a 1.625 in. crack extending up from the umbo/hinge. Gift of Gerald H. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Geology. EDU2014.009 Background information provided by Professor Johnson: "The Jefferson scallop was first described by Martin Lister in 1687. Thomas Say officially named it Pecten jeffersonius in 1824. Ward and Blackwelder erected a new genus of fossil scallops, Chesapecten, in 1975 and assigned the Jefferson scallop to it. Later the Virginia State Legislature adopted Chesapecten jeffersonius as the state fossil of Virginia upon the urging of staff at the Virginia Natural History Museum and members of the College of William and Mary community. "The state fossil is found in the lower part of the Yorktown Formation, a shelly sand with a diverse fossil fauna. The Yorktown crops out along rivers in eastern Virginia. Chesapecten jeffersonius lived on a shallow, wave-swept sea floor during the early Pliocene Epoch, about 4 million years ago. Most shells are preserved in their original state, and are composed of the minteral calcite. Many scallops have fossil borings made by snails, worms, clams, 'moss animals' and algae, and also may have barnacles, corals and other organisms attached to their shells."
